Another major application of Stainless Steel Fibre is in Shotcrete. The most remarkable influence of the incorporation of Stainless Steel Fibre in concrete decreases and controls tensile cracking of the composite material. This also changes the mechanical properties of the concrete. As we know that plain unreinforced shotcrete, like unreinforced concrete, is a brittle material with little capacity to resist pronounced tensile stresses or strains without cracking and disruption. When Stainless Steel fibers are incorporated in shotcrete it improves the ductility, energy absorption, fatigue, and impact resistance. Stainless Steel fibers perform this role in shotcrete by controlling cracking and holding the material together, even after extensive cracking has occurred. Similarly, the addition of Stainless Steel Fibre also increases the compressive strength characterizing the more ductile material which helps in preventing sudden and explosive failure under static loading and in absorbing energy under dynamic loading. Apart from this, another primary reason to add Stainless Steel Fibre into Shotcrete increases the flexural strength and toughness of the shotcrete.
