What is End Grain, Edge Grain, or Face Grain?

End, edge, and face grain refer to the different sides of a wooden board.

• End grain is the narrow, porous top and bottom edge of the board. The tree's growth rings can sometimes be observed in stacked, parallel, or curved lines.

• Face grain, also known as plain grain, typically showcases the wide face of a milled board, displaying multiple layers of grain arranged in various shapes, such as U, V, or even O shapes.

• Edge grain is usually the long, thin edge of a milled piece of lumber, characterized by long and parallel grain patterns.

What Are the Benefits of End Grain Surfaces?

• End grain surfaces are not only aesthetically pleasing but also advantageous for cutting surfaces. When a cutting blade meets the wood, it slices between the grains rather than across them. Imagine holding a handful of spaghetti. If you were to cut across it, much like you would with edge or face grain wood, you'd sever the strands, harming the wood's integrity. However, if you cut through the ends, like slicing the pasta from above, you're mimicking how a knife operates on end grain. The end grain allows the fibers to separate and then close back together, making it highly durable and easy to maintain with a quick mineral oil treatment and minimal sanding.
