What is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is a renowned technique that employs woven mesh to support an ink-blocking stencil. Often referred to as serigraphy or silkscreen printing, this method is prevalent across different sectors.

It's highly effective for creating bold canvases, posters, and artwork and can also be used on fabrics like caps, umbrellas, and T-shirts, as well as other flat surfaces like mugs.

This method produces vivid colors, even on darker materials, making it a preferred choice for many brands. The reusability of stencils allows for efficient mass production, contributing to its widespread use.

Screen Printing Method: A Step-by-Step Guide

Screen printing can be applied to various canvases. The basic technique remains consistent, ensuring uniform quality across different products. Let's explore the screen printing steps.

Step 1: Design Creation

The first step involves creating the design, which is then printed onto a transparent acetate film to create the stencil.

Step 2: Screen Preparation

The next step is preparing the screen and selecting the appropriate mesh count based on the design. The mesh screen is coated with a light-reactive emulsion that hardens under light exposure.

Step 3: Exposing the Emulsion

The acetate film is placed on the emulsion-coated screen under bright light, hardening the exposed emulsion while keeping the covered parts in liquid form. Separate screens are used for multi-colored designs.

Step 4: Washing the Emulsion and Stencil Creation

After exposure, the unhardened emulsion is washed off, leaving a clear imprint of the design. The screen is dried, and touch-ups are made to ensure accuracy. The stencil is now ready for use.

Step 5: Items Printing

The material to be printed is laid flat, and the screen is placed on top. This can be done manually or with an automatic press, often using automatic rotary carousel printers in modern settings.

Step 6: Ink Pressing

The screen is lowered onto the printing board, and ink is added. A squeegee pulls the ink across the screen, pressing it through open stencil areas to imprint the design. After printing, the emulsion is washed off for reusing the mesh.

Step 7: Products Drying and Checking

The printed items are cured on a dryer for a smooth, colorfast finish and undergo stringent quality control checks for any necessary corrections.
