I always feel like Meredith from the Parent Trap when I come across other hikers while wearing this, but the protection it provides from mosquitoes makes it completely worth it. While my companions slap at their necks and faces, I sit smugly under my little net.
You may be wondering about this "Insect Shield." I was skeptical, and really just bought this for the net. However, on the head net's first outing, I noticed that the mosquitoes swarming around me would approach, hover, and then leave without actually running into the head net. Insect shield? Maybe. Since then I have noticed a few mosquitoes landing on the net, so maybe the insect shield is wearing off. Just an anecdotal observation that doesn't necessarily mean anything.
I usually wear the net with a hat, but I have also worn it successfully without a hat. It is loose enough to eat small compact things like candy bars without taking it off. Sometimes it gets caught in trees when I venture into dense vegetation, but it is remarkably strong, and often takes little leaves or branches with it. It has held up without tears or other failure since I bought it in early . I have used it so far on one week-long trip, at least one weekend trip, and a couple of day trips.
Also, it comes with a cute little stuff sack. This is useful because otherwise the head net would be a mess in my pack, but mostly I like the stuff sack because it is so very cute.
You don't really see the net when you're wearing it-- because it's black, you see through it, though everything is a little brighter when you take it off.
Edit 1/29/15: I still have this, it is still in good shape, everything said above is still true, except I have worn it on a few more trips.
