Makeup Organization Tips & Best Acrylic Makeup Organizer

My biggest frustration with my bathroom vanity is the lack of drawers; I'm sure many of you can relate. With only a single short drawer, a few years ago, I believed I could cull and consolidate my makeup enough to designate it as my makeup drawer. I succeeded temporarily. I was using a small, deep acrylic makeup organizer on my countertop that took up too much space and didn’t fit my makeup well. To clear the vanity surface, I purged my old makeup until it comfortably fit inside the drawer. However, my success was short-lived. With the limited drawer space, any extra makeup had to go in the closet or under the sink, tossed into random baskets. Ultimately, it started to crowd my countertop, which grew increasingly cluttered. I always emphasize that when it comes to organization, function reigns supreme, but sometimes it takes a few trials and errors to get it just right. After several years of struggling with the single drawer system, I made makeup organization a priority at the beginning of the year. Thankfully, my bathroom and vanity have been conquered, allowing my makeup to breathe again! When my makeup organization is on point, I can easily access and find items, and I tend to use my makeup more frequently. My solution was an acrylic makeup organizer with customizable modules that I could construct and assemble to fit my needs.

While I had an acrylic organizer for my makeup several years ago, it was too deep and not wide enough. The system I’ve now implemented is wide but not too deep. I will share exactly what I’m able to store in each drawer, along with the acrylic makeup drawers I used to complete my beautiful tower. As a reminder, or for those who haven’t seen my former makeup solution, this is what I was working with.

As soon as I needed to add a bottle of foundation, I was done for. All the makeup mixed together, and while I was hopeful, it just wasn’t a viable solution for me. I needed something with extra room where I could actually see what I had. I swear the back of my makeup drawer devoured several brushes and my eyelash curler.

Acrylic Makeup Organizer

I was hesitant to search for a countertop solution before because I wanted my products hidden. However, given the choice of a bare countertop or a functional organizer, I’ll take the countertop organizer! After searching extensively for a solution to accommodate my tallest and longest makeup products, I landed on this Luxe acrylic modular system, featuring substantial, stackable drawers that transform into the exact makeup organization system I needed. The inserts that fit within the drawers allow for endless customization. Here’s what my acrylic makeup organizer looks like now:

Now that I have my products on display yet orderly, I love the look. Plus, with the right organizer, I still have ample room for other items like my apothecary jars, and there’s plenty of space to prepare and apply my makeup. If you've never tried acrylic, it's not just a clear plastic you might be familiar with. Acrylic is a sturdy material, has a good weight to it, is durable, and is much easier to clean than plastic, which tends to fog over time.

How to Organize Your Makeup

Creating a custom makeup organizer from individual modules may seem intimidating, but here are some tips:

  1. Take inventory of your makeup. Dispose of old or unused makeup. Once you’ve purged, group like items together – eyes, lips, face, cheeks, etc. You can even subdivide further if you have a lot of makeup – shadows, liners, lashes, lipsticks, glosses, etc.
  2. Consider what you have most and least of to determine if your specified categories require wide or narrow drawers.
  3. Measure your tallest and longest products to ensure your drawers can accommodate chunky or long items. For me, that includes the Laura Mercier translucent powder and my Naked palettes.
  4. Establish homes for your categories that contain the most items and largest/awkwardly shaped items first. It’s easier to make room for an eyebrow pencil than a setting spray.
  5. Don’t be afraid of trial and error. Order or bring home more than you think you need to achieve the best configuration. I often find my best ideas by experimenting. You can always return any extra or unused components.
  6. Don’t try to cram everything into a limited number of drawers. Leave plenty of space to add items and ample room to see and access your products when getting ready. You want to be able to see your products clearly.

The great news is that the module sizes of the acrylic makeup drawers work together within the same system, making it easier to build your own organizer. There are only two heights (tall and short, with the short being exactly half the height of the tall), and three widths (large single drawer, medium half the size of single, and small half the size of the medium). For instance, if you have a large single drawer base, like I do, you can stack a single on top, two mediums on top, or a medium with two smalls, and so on. Here are the exact components I used:

Components:

  • (2) Large Luxe Acrylic Modular Drawers
  • (1) Medium Luxe Acrylic Modular Drawer

The benefit of this system is its customization options, but there are also pre-packaged sets you can use as a starting point. You can find more inspiration and configuration ideas here.

Acrylic Makeup Organizer – What’s Inside Each Drawer

I consider myself to have an average amount of makeup; I enjoy having options, but my days of needing every color eyeshadow are long gone. Let’s peek inside each drawer, starting with my overall drawer storage setup. I still have multiple empty compartments in the top organizer and an entirely empty drawer.

My acrylic organizer on top of the unit is one piece; you can remove the lipstick tray if you wish, forming one large compartment. The back sections, where I keep my daily items and perfumes (plus a completely empty last row that isn’t pictured), are actually on a little riser. Makeup palettes would fit well here too if you prefer not to keep them in drawers.

I have one short medium drawer with a divided insert for lip liners and glosses.

Next to it, I reserved a drawer for lashes, using another short medium drawer with a divided insert for faux lashes and mascaras.

After years of neglecting my nails, I finally tossed my decades-old polishes. I kept some files and tools and stored them in a small tall acrylic drawer.

Next to the nail drawer, I stacked two small short drawers on top of each other. One drawer is still empty, while the other holds eyeliner, eyebrow pencils, and sharpeners.

All of my eyeshadow palettes fit in the medium tall drawer – proof that Naked palettes fit quite well! They could fit in the short small drawers on their side if you aren't pairing them with other brands.

I have a significant amount of face products, so I used inserts to group similar items together in the large drawer. I employed the long 2-section insert to organize my foundations, concealers, bronzers, powders, and highlighters. The tall drawers are spacious enough to store compacts sideways, saving space.

Side note: If you saw my gift guides last Christmas, you may recognize the initial necklace I received, featuring our three initials. It’s so dainty and sweet, and it came in beautiful packaging. I've been wearing it daily.

I’m a few weeks into using my new acrylic makeup organizer, and so far, so good. I’m hopeful it’s the solution I’ve needed. One of my favorite new features is displaying my daily products, from hair care to deodorant, and keeping them easily accessible. Though my drawer system is more extensive (I'm short and it doesn't obstruct my mirror view), the modules can be customized, allowing others to create much smaller configurations. If you have a wide vanity, you could opt for a lower design with a base of two large drawers. It’s easy to add more as your collection grows or your needs change.

While I was finalizing my makeup solutions, I tackled the rest of the vanity too, which I’ll share next week. Meanwhile, you can subscribe to emails at the bottom of the post to catch that project and other upcoming organization ideas, and check out other projects in the organization gallery HERE.
