Introduction to Vehicle Coil Springs

Vehicle coil springs are among the most critical components of a vehicle. They serve to support the weight of the vehicle and control the movements of the suspension. A coil spring is made of a wire wound in a spiral shape, forming the structure of a coil spring. By compressing and extending the coil spring, the vehicle can absorb road irregularities, ensuring a smooth ride.

There are various types of vehicle coil springs, including conical coil springs, linear coil springs, and progressive coil springs. Each type has its own advantages and drawbacks and is suitable for specific vehicle types and applications. Choosing the right coil spring depends on factors such as vehicle weight, spring constant, and desired driving behavior.

Coil springs play a crucial role in vehicle suspension and directly impact driving behavior. A properly chosen and adjusted coil spring can improve handling and stability, while an incorrect choice can lead to undesirable driving behavior and poor performance. Therefore, understanding the basics of coil springs and making the right selection for your vehicle is essential.

Types of Vehicle Coil Springs

There are various types of coil springs used in vehicles, each with its own characteristics and benefits. Here are some of the most common types of coil springs:

  • Conical Coil Springs: This type of coil spring has a variable diameter, with one end larger than the other. This design allows for more progressive suspension, providing a softer suspension at the beginning and a stiffer suspension at stronger compression.
  • Linear Coil Springs: Linear coil springs maintain a constant diameter throughout their length. This type of coil spring offers consistent suspension throughout the entire suspension travel and is suitable for general road use.
  • Progressive Coil Springs: Progressive coil springs have variable stiffness over the suspension travel. They offer softer suspension during minor compression and stiffer suspension during major compression. This design allows for better control and improved driving behavior.

Choosing the right coil spring for vehicles depends on various factors, including vehicle weight, vehicle application, and desired suspension characteristics. It’s important to consider these factors to ensure optimal performance and handling of your vehicle.

Function of Coil Springs in a Vehicle

Coil springs play a crucial role in vehicle suspension and serve several functions. Here are some of the key functions of coil springs in a vehicle:

  • Weight-Bearing Function: One of the main functions of coil springs is to support the weight of the vehicle. The coil springs are positioned between the vehicle’s body and the wheels, supporting the entire vehicle weight.
  • Absorption of Irregularities: Coil springs absorb road irregularities, ensuring a smooth ride. When the vehicle encounters an irregularity, the coil springs compress, absorbing the impact force’s energy. This provides a uniform ride and minimizes vibrations and shocks.
  • Control of Suspension: Coil springs play an important role in controlling the suspension. They help keep the wheels in contact with the road and control the movements of the suspension. A well-tuned coil spring improves the vehicle’s handling and stability.
  • Suspension Adjustability: Depending on the vehicle type and application, coil springs can be adjusted and tuned to achieve the desired driving behavior. By altering the spring constant or preload, you can influence stiffness and driving behavior.

The function of coil springs in a vehicle is complex and directly impacts driving behavior and performance. Understanding how coil springs work is crucial to ensure the optimal performance and handling of your vehicle.

Factors in Selecting Vehicle Coil Springs

When selecting coil springs for your vehicle, there are several important factors to consider. Here are some of the key factors you should take into account:

  • Vehicle Weight: Your vehicle’s weight is a crucial factor in selecting the right coil springs. Coil springs are available in different weight classes, and the right choice depends on the weight distribution and total weight of your vehicle.
  • Vehicle Application: The type of vehicle application also plays a role in choosing the right coil springs. Whether it’s daily road use, racing, or off-roading, coil spring requirements vary depending on the application.
  • Spring Constant: The spring constant is a measure of coil spring stiffness. The higher the spring constant, the stiffer the suspension. Choosing the right spring constant depends on your vehicle type and personal preferences.
  • Spring Height and Diameter: The height and diameter of coil springs influence suspension height and travel. It’s important to adjust these parameters according to the vehicle’s requirements and desired performance.

Choosing the right coil springs is crucial to ensure the optimal performance and handling of your vehicle. It’s advisable to seek professional advice or consult experienced car enthusiasts to make the best choice for your vehicle.

How to Measure Coil Springs and Select the Right Coil Springs for Your Vehicle

To select the right coil springs for your vehicle, it’s important to take accurate measurements. Here are some steps you can follow to measure coil springs and choose the right ones for your vehicle:

  • Measure the Height of Existing Coil Springs: Use a tape measure or caliper to measure the height of the existing coil springs. Record the measurements for each coil spring separately.
  • Measure the Diameter of Existing Coil Springs: Similarly, use a tape measure or caliper to measure the diameter of the existing coil springs. Also, record these measurements for each coil spring separately.
  • Determine the Spring Constant: The spring constant may be indicated on the coil springs themselves or in the vehicle’s technical specifications. If you can’t find the spring constant, contact the vehicle manufacturer or a professional.
  • Consider Vehicle Requirements: When selecting the right coil springs, consider your vehicle’s specific requirements. Take into account factors such as vehicle weight, vehicle application, and desired driving behavior.
  • Consult a Professional: If you’re unsure or need further assistance, don’t hesitate to consult a professional. An experienced mechanic or car enthusiast can help you choose the right coil springs for your vehicle.

Choosing the right coil springs is crucial to ensure the optimal performance and handling of your vehicle. Take the time to make accurate measurements and select the right coil springs for your vehicle.

Coil Springs Struts and Shock replacement - good options

Blauparts - Blausports

I've been quite intrigued by the fact that Blauparts includes everything needed for a strut/shock replacement in one kit. However i'm still surprised they would not release more information about this themselves.

Other than a reseller website and a youtube video with a spinning jetta (that supposedly has these struts installed) there's very little information available directly from them.

I'm a bit skeptical, even though there are folks out there that tested their products and seem to have been convinced by their quality.

When i called them and asked them for specifics on their manufacturing, the rep told me she doesn't have that info - and gave me some similar items that are on the market that these could be compared to Bilstein Touring Class, or KYB EXCEL-G.
People online are saying these might be produced by KYB ... some getting KYB labeled instructions. Who knows. I've also read some good things about their shipping speed.

Based on what i read online they seem to be reliable - i just wish they wouldn't be so secretive about their product manufacturing.

Still gotta find a good source for coil springs that match up on the rating that i currently have.

Is there a way to get softer suspension but still have the weight capacity of the current setup? I could really use a softer ride compared to what i have now, but who knows maybe that's because the shocks/struts/springs are worn out? Not sure.

Someone also said online that after about a week or so of thinking the blauparts were too stiff, the feel softened and now he's loving them.

Hard to decide what to do.
