Almost 50 years ago, when I was 18, I worked a summer for Brown & Root, as an instrument fitter's helper. Among the many things I did was to make up hydraulic hoses.
It's been a loooong time ago and my memory is suspect. However, I seem to recall that everything I did, from cutting the hose off a reel, to installation of the hydraulic ends, I accomplished with only a hack saw, wrenches, a vise, and a liberal dose of oomph.
Today, I would like to be able to make up hoses for our tractors, a forklift, and a hydraulic tracer mill.
I've looked at hose crimper machines on ebay. The prices seem to run from about a thousand abdullahs for a manual crimper set (sort of the "Lee Loader" of the hydraulic hose crimping game) to vastly more expensive machines. Should I decide to enter the game I'd certainly like to do so at the low end. One single current project - the tracer mill - will require me to expend a significant pile of dough. So, the timing is right for me to consider this. Although saving money is part of the equation the other part is the independence of having the capability for the future. So, I'm not really asking for a financial analysis as much as I am asking you to share your collective experience on what the minimum equipment requirements are to allow me to "roll my own".
But to start, will a hacksaw "cut it"? Anybody been there and done that? Using the ammunition loading analogy, I'd hope to hear what is available starting with "the Lee loader" and ending with "the single stage press". I consider that the "progressive reloader" is beyond my means and my needs.
Thanks

Gates have been manufacturing hydraulic hose for over 100 years. Now theyve put together a starter kit so you can make your own hose assemblies on site, using high-quality Gates hose and connectors, and an easy to use self-assembly machine. But you wont just save on the cost of making the assemblies.
With Gates special offer, you can also get a power-operated crimper for the unbelievable price of just £1!
Of course you cant buy the crimper on its own for that price. But then, you were always going to buy hose and couplings anyway, so its no additional cost to buy enough to qualify for the special offer. Plus, when you buy from Gates, you have the reassurance youre buying high-quality hose which wont let you down.
There are three different starter kits to choose from, with three different qualifying levels of spend to get the £1 crimper.
A simple to use, lightweight machine suitable for workshops wanting to manufacture hydraulic hose assemblies for their own use. The crimper can accommodate hose assemblies up to 1 wire braid. To qualify, simply spend £2,970 on Gates hose and couplings.
A hand-operated crimper capable of crimping up to 1¼ wire braid, and 1 multi- spiral. Portable enough to be used in the workshop or as a mobile machine. Comes complete with a separate box to store the die sets. Qualifying purchase: £5,200 of Gates hose and couplings.
zkhthydraulics supply professional and honest service.
Featured content:Enables you to manufacture hose assemblies up to 1¼ wire braid and 1 multi- spiral hose, using the power-operated crimper. Qualifying purchase: £6,400 on Gates hose and couplings.
Whichever Starter Kit you choose, all terminations are available, with the kits profiled to include the most popular couplings, with BSP, JIC, ORFS and Metric popular threads and forms.
Manufacturing your own hose assemblies will certainly save you money.
Unlike when you use a manufacturer to create your assemblies, therell be no call-out charge when you need a new one. Therell be no delay while you wait for the hose engineer to arrive. Youll have hose assemblies available 24/7. And there will be no unforeseen or additional costs.
But while using a Gates starter kit cuts your costs, it doesnt mean you have to cut corners on quality or compromise on safety:
Once your operator has been trained and certified by authorised ERIKS personnel, the comprehensive Gates guarantee will apply to all hose assemblies he or she produces with the Gates self-assembly machine.
