Marine Propulsion Shafts/Bars

A propulsion shaft is a part of a system that generates thrust for a boat, ship or barge, allowing them to move through the water, also known as marine propulsion. Marine propulsion uses a thrust block, located at the forward end of the main shaft, with the shaft line that incorporates all the components to move the vessel. These components include the propulsion shaft, which is used in conjunction with the tail shaft, intermediate shaft, thrust shaft, flange coupling, gearbox, marine engine components, propeller shaft, propeller and bearings that hold the shaft's alignment.

Shafts For Marine Applications:

  • Propeller, tail and drive shafts
  • Rudder stock, upper vertical, lower vertical shafts and pintle pins
  • Line, intermediate, main and stub shafts
  • Controllable and variable pitch shafts
  • Flanged torque shafts
  • Input shafts

Marine shafts are subjected to many loading types during use, including torque, bending, axle thrust and transverse load. In addition to load stress, weather and sea conditions create corrosion and wear and tear, reducing the propulsion shaft's lifetime. All of these reasons are why the requirements are so severe for these types of forgings; many "simple" parts play a critical role in not only performance but also crew safety, which is why finding a reliable partner for manufacturing these critical parts is essential.

Forging Experience & Capability: Ship, Submarine & Boat Shaft Forgings

At Scot Forge, we know working to regulations for marine applications costs time and money. We can offer you a seasoned partner who comprehends the different processes to meet safety requirements and can help minimize this cost, while mitigating the risk of not meeting requirements. We have extensive experience forging propeller shafts in many diameters exceeding lengths of 75 feet (22-meter shafts), dependent on the application and overall dimensions required. We supply marine propulsion components for superyachts, cruise ships, submarines, naval ships and patrol vessels. We commonly produce shafts using C45, 34CrNiMo6, Stainless Steel, Inconel and can even create custom material to meet specifications - in forged surface, rough machined and fully machined finishes, if needed.

Driveshaft - OEM Casting and Forging

Driveshaft

Forging
Using extensive data accumulated from forming analysis, die stress analysis, etc., Yamaha can produce cold-forged parts with a high degree of precision. By using an automated transport system for the many work processes involved in forming this part, we are able to lower production costs.

Heat Treatment
Carburizing and quenching increases surface hardness, and thus increases bending fatigue strength, surface fatigue strength and resistance to wear. The driveshaft is another key part in increasing a motorcycle's performance.
